Deactivating Fear – Deaktivace strachu

In today’s world we face a silent enemy – fear. It creeps up and pounces without warning. It grips the hearts and minds of many people. Most of us have experienced at some time or another, the fear that strikes during the night and disturbs our sleep, keeping us awake. However the gospel message of “do not be afraid” has made it possible for us to disable our fears.

It is daybreak and two women went looking for Jesus. They perhaps walked in silence, thoughtful as each one remembered the poignant events of two days ago. At the tomb they found things as expected but this was about to change. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, easily rolled back the stone from the sealed tomb and sat on it! The men guarding the tomb were unable to move. That is what fear does – it paralyses and makes people ineffective. The women were likely afraid too but the angel’s message “do not be afraid” dispels their fear. He explains why – “He is not here; he is risen, just as he said.” (Matthew 28:5-6 NIV) The angel points back to what Jesus had spoken to them earlier. Remembering Jesus’ promises deals with our fear. At times we have unfamiliar experiences that we don’t understand. This is when fear can slip in. If we keep seeking Jesus and recalling the promises he has given us from his word we can dispel fear and change our future. He means what he says!

Take time to read the story above in Matthew’s gospel 28:1-10. The words “do not be afraid” appear twice; by the angel and then by Jesus himself to the women. There are some encouraging thoughts here. Fear of the future is common especially with the troubles around the world today. However, because Jesus has risen, “he is going ahead of you.”(28:7) Anywhere we travel in life, we are not going on alone but with Jesus and he is already there. So there’s no need to fear the future because Jesus has already been in our future. We have to trust Jesus – the one who has gone ahead of us. The two women still afraid yet filled with joy, hurried off to tell Jesus’ disciples the good news. On the way they met Jesus and they worshipped him. Worship produces peace and focus is changed as we take our eyes of our situation and recall Jesus’ promises.

The fear of the men guarding the tomb led to lies and illegal monetary gain. They took money and did as they were instructed. They still may have lost their lives when the governor found out they had left their post at the tomb. So there was no guarantee. In comparison, the women followed Jesus’ instruction and overcame their fear. Make sure you look to Jesus to dispel fear and no other sources. They only give short relief. We have to go to the right source to be set free from fear. Jesus brings peace and purpose and a realigning of focus. Fear blocks out our vision of reality yet Jesus can give fresh vision and direction. The religious leaders in this story refused to believe that something remarkable had happened. In doing so, they missed out on being part of the greatest event in history.

The Bible is full of verses that tell us not to be afraid. One of my favourites is found in the Psalms. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear…” (Ps. 46:1-2) The Psalm goes on to describe earth-shattering natural and nation events. Then concludes with these words: “Be still, and know that I am God…The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” (Ps. 46:10-11)

The gospel story begins in Matthew 1:20 with the words “do not be afraid,” making known the birth of the Saviour, Jesus. A new beginning is announced by an angel of the Lord to Joseph. Later an angel announces the good news of Jesus’ resurrection and again we see the words “do not be afraid.” (Matt 28:5) Matthew’s gospel story closes as it began with a promise – “And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.”(Matt 28:20) That promise is realised in the name announced by the angel as Immanuel which means “God with us.” (Matt 1:23) Jesus has done everything so that we don’t have to be afraid. He has all authority and is with us always.

V dnešním světě čelíme tichému nepříteli – strachu. Vplíží se a zaútočí bez varování. Zmocňuje se srdcí a myslí mnoha lidí. Většina z nás někdy zakusila strach, který útočí v noci, ruší náš spánek a drží nás v bdělosti. Ale je tady poselství evangelia: „nebojte se“, díky kterému je možné zbavit naše strachy moci.

Je ráno a dvě ženy přicházejí hledat Ježíše. Možná, že jdou tiše, jsou zamyšlené, protože obě vzpomínají na bolestné události posledních dvou dní. U hrobu nacházejí vše tak, jak očekávaly, ale to se má brzy změnit. Náhle se zjevuje anděl Páně, s lehkostí odvalí kámen od zapečetěného hrobu a posadí se na něj. Muži, kteří střeží hrob, se nemohou pohnout. Takto působí strach – paralyzuje a způsobuje, že člověk není ničeho schopen. Ženy se nejspíš bály také, ale andělovo poselství „nebojte se“ jejich strach zahání. Vysvětluje, proč – „Není zde; byl vzkříšen, jak řekl.“ (Matouš 28,5-6; ČEP) Anděl poukazuje na to, co jim Ježíš dříve řekl. Připomínka Ježíšových zaslíbení jedná s naším strachem. Občas se dostaneme do neznámých situací, kterým nerozumíme. Tehdy se může vplížit strach. Pokud budeme hledat Ježíše a připomínat si zaslíbení, která nám dal ve svém Slově, budeme schopni vyhnat strach a změnit svou budoucnost. On to, co říká, opravdu myslí vážně!

Podívejme se blíž na výše zmíněný příběh v Matoušově evangeliu 28,1-10. Výrok „nebojte se“ se tady objevuje dvakrát, vyslovují ho andělé a později ho říká ženám samotný Ježíš. Nacházíme zde určité myšlenky, které nás mohou povzbudit. Strach z budoucnosti je běžný, zvláště vzhledem k dnešním problémům ve světě. Nicméně protože Ježíš byl vzkříšen, „jde před vámi“. (28,7; ČSP) Kamkoli jdeme v životě, nejdeme sami, ale s Ježíšem a on už tam je. Takže není potřeba bát se budoucnosti, protože Ježíš už je v naší budoucnosti přítomen. Musíme mu důvěřovat – tomu, který nás předešel. Tyto dvě ženy, stále ještě vystrašené, ale naplněné radostí, spěchají, aby sdělily Ježíšovým učedníkům dobrou zprávu. Na cestě se setkávají s Ježíšem a uctívají ho. Uctívání působí pokoj a změnu pohledu. Odvracíme oči od své situace a připomínáme si Ježíšova zaslíbení.

Strach těch, kteří střežili hrob, vedl ke lžím a nelegálnímu finančnímu zisku. Vzali peníze a udělali to, co jim bylo nařízeno. Přesto mohli přijít o život, až by se vládce dozvěděl, že hrob nestřežili řádně. Nebyla zde žádná záruka. Naproti tomu ženy následovaly Ježíšův příkaz a překonaly svůj strach. Když potřebuješ vyhnat svůj strach, je důležité hledět k Ježíši, ne k jiným zdrojům útěchy. Ty poskytují pouze krátkodobou úlevu. Abychom byli osvobozeni od strachu, musíme jít k tomu správnému zdroji. Ježíš přináší pokoj a směr a změnu pohledu. Strach blokuje náš pohled na realitu, ale Ježíš může dát nový pohled a směr. Náboženští vůdcové v tomto příběhu odmítli uvěřit, že se stalo něco pozoruhodného. Kvůli tomu promeškali příležitost být součástí největší události dějin.

Bible je plná veršů, které nás vyzývají, abychom se nebáli. Jeden z mých oblíbených se nachází v žalmech. „Bůh je naším útočištěm i silou, velkou pomocí, kterou nacházíme v souženích. Proto se nebudeme bát…“ (Ž 46,2-3; ČSP) Autor žalmu pokračuje popisováním událostí ničících zemi i národ. Pak uzavírá těmito slovy: „Přestaňte! Uznejte, že já jsem Bůh… Hospodin zástupů je s námi, nepřístupným hradem je nám Bůh Jákobův.“ (Ž 46,11-12; ČSP)

Příběh evangelia začíná v evangeliu podle Matouše 1,20 slovy „neboj se“, když je oznamováno narození spasitele Ježíše. Nový začátek je zvěstován Pánovým andělem Josefovi. Později anděl oznamuje dobrou zprávu o Ježíšově vzkříšení a znovu vidíme slova „nebojte se“ (Mt 28,5). Matoušovo líčení evangelia končí tak, jak začíná, zaslíbením: „A hle, já jsem s vámi po všechny dny až do skonání tohoto věku.“ (Mt 28,20; ČSP) Toto zaslíbení se naplňuje ve jménu „Immanuel“ oznámeném andělem, které znamená „Bůh s námi“. (Mt 1,23) Ježíš udělal vše, abychom se nemuseli bát. Má veškerou moc a je vždy s námi.
